Covenant wholly embraces and subscribes to the Presbyterian form of church government prescribed in Scripture. Our ordained officers-Elders and Deacons- have the privilege of providing Biblical leadership for Covenant's entire ministry.
Elders are men responsible for the teaching, rule and shepherding (pastoral care) of the body. Within the office of elder, there is the further distinction of Teaching and Ruling eldership. Our pastors, whose primary function is the ministry of Word and sacrament (preaching, teaching and administration of sacraments), are identified as Teaching Elders. Ruling Elders have the primary responsibility of rule and shepherding of the flock. The entire body of elders, both teaching and ruling, comprises the Session, the governing body of this local expression of Christ's church. As members of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), the Session submits to the oversight of a local PCA Presbytery.
Deacons are men responsible for leading the congregation in mercy ministry, providing guidance to the Session on the church's finances and maintaining the church's facilities. The diaconate (the body of deacons), as does all ministry, submits to the leadership and authority of the Session.
In Christ's body, all members are called to serve the Lord and one another in Gospel ministry with the varied gifts He lavishly bestows on His children. Our officers, though responsible to provide humble leadership to all ministries in ways peculiar to ordained ministry, are not solely responsible for doing ministry in this church. Among their greatest responsibilities are encouragement, nurture and discipleship of the body spurring it to "love and good deeds" for the glory of God. Members are encouraged to "make the leadership's work a joy" by submitting to its authority and joyfully and heartily serving in the ministries of the church as the Lord enables.
